Abstract
The periocular area, where facial skin is thinnest and most expressive, is often the first to reveal signs of aging. Aesthetic procedures can correct structural changes, but they do not replace daily, ongoing care. Dermocosmetics formulated specifically for the eye contour have become a standard complement to medical-aesthetic treatments, with potential preventive, corrective, and maintenance benefits. This narrative review summarizes the evidence on the efficacy and safety of these products and their role in a comprehensive approach to periocular rejuvenation. A literature search in PubMed (2010-2025) identified randomized trials, observational studies, and mechanistic research on periocular anatomy, active ingredients, and clinical outcomes. Retinoids, peptides, antioxidants, vasomodulators, and depigmenting agents improve hydration, firmness, pigment uniformity, and puffiness, particularly alongside aesthetic procedures. Most available studies, however, derive from finished multicomponent formulations rather than isolated ingredients; studies are short-term, industry-sponsored, and limited in participant diversity and endpoints, so further independent, long-term, periocular-specific studies are needed. Dermocosmetics for the eye contour may provide a noninvasive strategy that supports skin resilience and complements procedures within a comprehensive periocular rejuvenation strategy. Closer collaboration between dermatologists, aesthetic physicians, and cosmetic formulators would help translate this evidence into more consistent periocular rejuvenation outcomes.
