Abstract
The Weimar Republic era (1918-1933) was filled with a spirit of artistic creativity and sexual freedom, which was captured in a series of portraits by the German artist Christian Schad (1894-1982) while residing in Berlin. This contribution discusses three of these portraits: (1) Self-portrait with Model (1927), (2) Portrait of Dr Hans Haustein (1928), and (3) Sonja (1928). Doctor Hans Haustein was a prominent dermatologist who was also the face of the art and decadent lifestyle of Berlin during the 1920s, as is detailed in this contribution. Tragically, Dr Hans Haustein was persecuted by the Nazis and committed suicide in 1933, the year in which the Weimar Republic came to an end.
